This wasn’t my first video cover collab, but it’s my first one that has more than two instruments. HZKGT‘s from Malaysia[1] and has done a lot of covers mainly of the metal persuasion as well as some SCANDAL ones, whilst Dahan is in SHEMUBROJA, an unofficial conglomerate of likeminded music-loving people who get together now and then for a jam at buangruang. I chose this SCANDAL song from HELLO WORLD after HZKGT asked if I was interested in doing a cover for Onegai. I had just recovered from the pain of learning to utilise the pinkie in my left hand for Rainy[2], but it actually made learning Onegai easier than expected. The drum tracks were laid done first in tandem with the pre-recorded SCANDAL track. The TD9-KX module was directly plugged into the M-AUDIO FW Solo interface which in turn is connected to my MBP, and recording was with GarageBand. I then did the guitar track using the MAMIKASUTA plugged direct into the Marshall DSL head. The cab was mic-ed with a Shure SM57. For the audio, I used the best one-shot attempt, with the solo recorded again on its own which was in two shots. The audio was recorded sitting down but I felt it looked boring, and re-recorded the guitar video (and audio) standing. Did this on the same day as I was still in the mood. HZKGT recorded his bass using Positive Grid’s BIAS FX and JAMUP PRO exclusively without a physical amp. This was on his iPad which was connected to GarageBand on his MBP. Whilst the guitar and drum vids were done with a GoPro on the tripod, his was handheld.

Mixing was on GarageBand as per usual. As for the video edit, this was my first proper FCPX project.
