TOMOMI

I guess I’m running out of names for TOMOMI’s bass guitars that I own. This is a tad late[1] but I had mentioned this MiJ SCANDAL signature Fender Precision bass back in 2018 here and in 2019 here.

This 1960-s styled P-bass has a satin poly finish on the body and neck, which is a right beaut. The alder body feels light and that is not a complain. TOMOMI had this P-bass of hers fitted with a narrower Jazz bass maple neck, which I really love. My first bass was a Jazz and this P-bass didn’t take long for me to get used to. The rosewood fingerboard adds some warmth to her tone, worthy of the trouble I had to go through to obtain her 2-odd years ago. The Fender Precision font on the headstock is period correct for a 1968-76 CBS era model. At the back of the headstock is TOMOMI’s dozy duck signature.

I had always wondered if a P-bass’ tone will be limited by the presence of a split single coiled pickup, and how mistaken I was. The nearest to a P-bass in my collection is the LTD Vintage-214 bass which is essentially a P-bass with an extra J-styled pickup at the bridge, and you can defo play around with the tone. In TOMOMI’s case, her American ’63[2] P-bass pickup is sweet, made malleable by just the tone knob and whatever I would dial on the amp, may it be the Behringer in buangruang, or the BIAS AMP 2 app on my iPad.

The bass came with a ridiculously flimsy Fender soft case which wasn’t even padded. Luckily, my neighbourhood guitar store has a second hand black Tolex Fender hard case on sale just before I left for KL for my vacation. With a red interior, TOMOMI looks handsomely comfy in it.
